The Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme is a Government run program. It is a “mandatory energy saving and carbon emissions reduction scheme for the UK” (Environment Agency, http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/topics/pollution/98263.aspx)
The scheme is particularly focused on larger businesses, both private and public sector, within the United Kingdom and it is hoped this will help the Government work towards its energy efficiency targets.
Businesses that will have to join the scheme are those which produce in excess of 6,000 megawatt hours of energy per year. These companies must sign up to the scheme before its deadline on the 30th September 2010 and begin filing their consumption.
It is hoped that this scheme will act as an incentive for the use of renewable energy sources. The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) will reward those companies that see the greatest reduction in energy usage with incentives. Likewise, those companies that see the least reduction will see negative consequences.
It has been reported that only 1,200 UK businesses have signed up for the scheme, even though the deadline is less than 6 weeks away and it is estimated that 4,000 companies will be required to comply with the scheme. However, if a company falls into the bracket that the scheme applies to but has not joined up before the deadline, they will face an initial £5,000 fine and following this, a £500 a day fine continually until this reaches £45,000. These strict compliance rules should ensure businesses join the program that will also save them money in the long run through reducing their energy bills.
