The Code for Sustainable Homes is in its essence, a standard for the design and construction of new homes, to ensure they are built with sustainability in mind.
The Code began in England in April 2007. At first the scheme was voluntary with a view to becoming mandatory. On 1st May 2008 the code became mandatory for all new build homes in England, with similar systems in Northern Ireland and Wales, but exempt for Scotland.
To ensure that builders and construction companies comply with the code, two methods will be taken:
The first assessment involves an interim certification during the initial design stage of the build which assesses the specifications and design drawings. If successful you will then receive a certificate of compliance.
The final assessment and certification is given once the construction of the building/s has taken place. This will provide confirmation of the initial assessment that the building has been built to standard.
Once this is done, your project will be rated in terms of how sustainable it is. You will be given a star rating ranging from one for meeting basic criteria through to six stars for successful sustainable considerations. It is very important to remember that should you choose not to design renewable energy solutions into your project, you will not receive planning permission for the build.
Design categories deemed important by the code (and it is these that are assessed) are as follows:
Adding these considerations into the design of your buildings need not be an extra burden to bear.
