The Lucion team can quickly and efficiently replace your tired old boiler with a bespoke, state of the art renewable heat source. Not only will this heat your home powerfully and reliably, but it will also dramatically lower your heating bills!
This page is designed to show you the different options available to replace your old boiler with, and a useful cost breakdown to show you how much money you could save by going green.
Boiler Repair: Why not replace with a renewable option and save money in the long run?
Solutions:
Is your boiler in need of servicing? Renewable alternatives are known to have lower running costs and to be more reliable.
Replace your boiler with an Air Source Heat Pump
An air source heat pump can provide a direct boiler replacement depending upon your circumstances. Air source heat pumps extract heat from the air outside your building and pump it back through the building to provide heating. This can be used with radiators, under floor heating and will supply hot water. Air source heat pumps now deliver heat at a similar temperature to conventional methods such as gas or oil boilers meaning that you do not necessarily need to change your existing heat delivery system. Air source heat pumps are easier to install than ground source heat pumps because they don’t require the ground works, all you need is air!
Replace your old boiler with a new Biomass Boiler
Biomass boilers are becoming a popular alternative appliance for the domestic and commercial market. Biomass boilers produce high grade heat by burning biomass pellets produced from recycled timber and dedicated timber harvesting supported by the forestry commission. This high grade heat is then stored within a buffer tank to be used for central heating and hot water purposes. Biomass boilers are usually suitable for replacing oil boilers in older buildings with a minimum level of disturbance as they share the same flue system and heat delivery systems e.g. radiators.
Replace your old boiler with a Ground Source Heat Pump
A common misconception of ground source heat pumps is that you need a great deal of land to fit the pump. This is true of some variations, but there are solutions for houses with smaller amounts of land too.
Cost advantages of replacing your oil boiler with a renewable energy source:
Example: 4 Bedroom, 176m2, well insulated property
| Old Oil Boiler | Air Source Heat Pump | Biomass Boiler | |
| Full installation cost | £6,890.00 | £7,595.00 | £10,300 |
| Typical running cost | £1200.00 | £650.00 | £700.00 |
| RHI received per year (estimate) | None. | £725.00 | £1350.00 |
| Total RHI amount received (estimate) | None. | £13,050.00 | £20,250.00 |
Renewable Heat Incentive
Air source heat pumps and biomass boilers would both qualify for the renewable heat incentive (RHI). The government have set aside £850m investment for the Renewable Heat Incentive. Schemes installed today by an MCS accredited installer such as Lucion Energy are eligible for a share of this funding.
If we were to take the predicted tariff levels of 7.5p/KwHr for air source heat pumps and 9p/KwHr for biomass boilers they would produce:
Air source: You would receive £725.00 a year, this would total £13,050 over 18 years.
Biomass boiler: You would receive £1350.00 per year, which would mean a total of £20,250.00 after 15 years.
Oil:
Full installation cost £6,890.00
Typical Running cost £1200.00 per annum
Air Source Heat Pump
Full installation cost £7,595.00
Typical Running cost £650.00
Biomass Boiler:
Full installation cost £10,300
Typical Running cost £700.00
