Geothermal heat pumps use the same hardware as ground source heat pumps but gather heat energy from deeper geothermal sources rather than shallow ground sources. In essence ground source heat pumps harvest heat that has been absorbed by the ground from the sun, whereas geothermal heat is drawn from the underlying geology. The most common form of geothermal heat pump is a borehole coupled Heat Pump. A borehole is a narrow shaft drilled into the ground from which heat is collected indirectly, via pipe (this is termed a closed loop system) or directly by injecting water into to ground and extracting it at well drilled nearby (this is termed an open loop system).
About Geothermal Ground Source Heat Pumps
Whether a borehole heat pump will be beneficial to you is dependent on whether it is possible to drill in the ground outside your house. This may be a good option for you if your building has limited space in which to place a horizontal ground source system or you do not wish to disturb your garden. The width of the hole for a borehole is very small and in-obtrusive, yet it goes deep into the ground.
What are the Benefits of a Geothermal Heat Pump?
All geothermal heat pumps can be highly beneficial over conventional heating sources as they do not require fossil fuels in order to function, they receive all their resources from heat of the earth, which remains at a fairly constant temperature all year around. Since the price of oil is set to continue to rise due to its demand, if you convert from oil to a ground source heat pump you will undoubtedly save money on your heating bills. Careful design is required to ensure the borehole is drilled to the required depth.
The geothermal heat pump is also a good option to when coupled with underfloor heating, as underfloor heating works at a lower average temperature than traditional radiators. Heat pumps work at a much higher efficiency when out putting at 40 degrees rather than 60-70 degrees. This means the heat pump can work very efficiently with underfloor heating.
Lucion Energy can also help you save money on a geothermal heat pump. We are well versed in current Government initiatives to help more households turn to renewable energy sources. One example of this is the Renewable Heat Incentive which is due to come into force in April 2011 to help you pay for the initial installation and pay it back as your heating bills are reduced by the ground source heat pump. Installation carried out after August 2009 will also be valid for the RHI if installed by an MSC accredited company.
